HoRNet Butterfly: The Ultimate Audio Mastering Tool and Channel Strip

HoRNet Plugins is proud to introduce HoRNet Butterfly, an audio mastering tool and channel strip designed to provide everything you need to perfect your stereo mixes or for final mastering. This plugin combines the power of several high-quality audio processing modules that you would typically find in separate plugins, offering exceptional versatility in a single interface.

HoRNet Butterfly borrows the same advanced technology that has made our SAMP, the Spatial Audio Master Processor used for Dolby Atmos, a go-to solution for mastering professionals. By leveraging this technology, Butterfly brings the same powerful features and processing capabilities to stereo busses and mono channels alike, ensuring high-end results for any project, regardless of scale.

Powerful Processing Modules

The plugin includes four key processing modules: an equalizer, a compressor, a clipper, and a limiter. These modules have been carefully designed to offer professional-grade sound shaping and dynamic control.

  1. Equalizer (TotalEQ Technology): The equalizer in HoRNet Butterfly uses the same cutting-edge technology found in our TotalEQ. This equalizer offers a wide range of frequency shaping with highly intuitive controls. With its precise and transparent sound processing, it enables users to make accurate tonal adjustments across the frequency spectrum. Whether you’re looking to add brightness to your mix or smooth out harsh mids, the equalizer in Butterfly provides a wide, musical range of control that fits any mastering or mixing task.

  2. Compressor (SyncPressor Technology): The SyncPressor compressor technology ensures transparent and musical dynamic control. Butterfly’s compressor uses the same advanced algorithms that allow for precise compression with minimal artifacts, delivering consistent dynamics without compromising the natural feel of the track. Whether you’re applying gentle compression to glue the mix or more aggressive settings to tame dynamics, the compressor’s versatility makes it suitable for all types of material.

  3. Clipper (Magnus MK2 Technology): The clipper section in Butterfly uses the same high-quality clipping technology found in our Magnus MK2. This module ensures clean clipping without introducing harsh digital distortion, even at high levels. Whether you’re looking to gently enhance the harmonic content of your mix or apply more noticeable clipping for effect, Butterfly’s clipper can adapt to the style and needs of the track.

  4. Limiter (Magnus MK2 Technology): The limiter in Butterfly is based on the same powerful algorithms used in the Magnus MK2. This powerful limiter provides transparent limiting while maintaining the integrity of the audio. With the ability to manage peaks without introducing unwanted artifacts, it’s perfect for the final stage of your mastering process. Butterfly’s limiter allows you to achieve the loudness you need while keeping your mix clear and dynamic.

Intelligent Oversampling and High-Quality Processing

One of the standout features of HoRNet Butterfly is its intelligent oversampling technology. This allows the plugin to deliver high-quality processing without introducing aliasing or artifacts at any sample rate. Whether you are working with 44.1kHz or 192kHz audio, Butterfly’s oversampling ensures that your audio is processed with pristine clarity and detail.

By utilizing oversampling, Butterfly can handle even the most complex frequency ranges and transient details with ease. The result is audio processing that is clean and transparent, no matter how much you push the limits.

Flexible Control and Rearrangeable Effect Order

HoRNet Butterfly is designed to offer a highly flexible workflow. The order of the four processing modules can be easily rearranged by dragging their positions in the top tabs control section. This level of flexibility allows you to create customized processing chains that fit your unique needs and the specific demands of your audio project.

Whether you want to place the clipper before the compressor for more dynamic control or apply EQ after limiting for tone shaping, Butterfly’s rearrangeable interface lets you experiment with different signal flows to get the best sound possible.

LUFS Metering for Precise Level Control

To assist with mastering, HoRNet Butterfly includes a built-in LUFS metering section. This section provides detailed feedback on the loudness of your track, with readings for momentary, short-term, integrated, and true peak levels. The LUFS readings ensure that your audio is properly calibrated for loudness, ensuring compliance with modern standards for streaming platforms, broadcast, and more.

The true peak meter ensures that your audio doesn’t clip above the digital maximum, keeping your track’s integrity intact while achieving the loudness you desire. This powerful metering system helps you monitor levels throughout your mastering process, providing accurate feedback on how your changes are affecting the overall loudness and clarity of your track.

The Unexpected Channel Strip Functionality

Although HoRNet Butterfly is primarily designed for mastering stereo busses, it is by no means limited to this application. The plugin’s flexibility extends to mono channels, effectively transforming Butterfly into a powerful channel strip. This makes it a versatile tool that can be used in any part of your production process, from tracking to mixing and mastering.

Additionally, if you don’t need a clipper or limiter for a particular session, each module in Butterfly can be independently disabled to save on CPU usage. This allows you to tailor the plugin to your specific needs, ensuring maximum efficiency.

Despite its powerful features, Butterfly is light on your system’s CPU. It is optimized to run smoothly even when used in multiple instances across a large project, giving you the freedom to add it to as many tracks as needed without worrying about performance degradation.

A Tool for All Producers and Engineers

Whether you are a mix engineer, mastering engineer, or producer, HoRNet Butterfly provides all the tools you need to create a polished and professional-sounding final product. Its ability to be used both as a mastering tool and a channel strip makes it incredibly versatile for all stages of production.

The high-quality processing, flexible control options, and the ability to rearrange the signal chain ensure that HoRNet Butterfly can handle a wide range of audio material. It empowers users to shape their sound with precision and clarity, achieving a masterful final result.

Conclusion

In conclusion, HoRNet Butterfly is a powerhouse plugin that combines professional-grade audio processing modules, intuitive design, and flexible control. Whether you are mastering a stereo mix or using it as a channel strip for individual tracks, Butterfly delivers high-quality results with minimal effort. With its precise EQ, compression, limiting, and clipping, combined with powerful metering and intelligent oversampling, HoRNet Butterfly is a must-have tool for any serious audio professional.

With its clean interface, easy-to-use controls, and flexible functionality, HoRNet Butterfly ensures that your audio projects will achieve the clarity, loudness, and impact you’re aiming for. Get ready to elevate your sound with HoRNet Butterfly today.

This was a really great discovery for me personally, and I am using this on individual channels, mostly vocals. Pure magic! I love the character of the soft clipping. One thing I do miss though is a wet dry mix control on the compressor and the clipper sections. I always like to blend in the unprocessed signal, or in the case of a clipper, the clean signal in order to preserve clean undistorted transients. Especially useful on kick and snare

Combined with the stock limiter of StudioOne6 I could easily reach loudness levels around -6dB LUFS without clipping. Very intuitive workflow as well.

Gennady G says:

Very good plugin for every music producer. If you need fast mastering or mixing, Butterfly is for you.

Al says:

Very nice user interface. Easy fix to stop it from clipping – just lower the output volume while using a trustworthy metering plugin like T-RackS 5 Metering at end of mastering chain.

It's not really the best HoRNet plugin even though it could be. I really enjoy the EQ section, which is pretty much like the Total EQ. The compressor section is average but totally usable nonetheless. Lacks a simple makeup gain control and would totally benefit from a compressor type option like the one it's present on Multicomp (VCA, FET, Opto). Clipper is also ok, but no gain compensation. The limiter section is pretty much useless as it seems to lack a very simple ceiling control. Everything that goes thru it just clips, missing completely the point of what a limiter should do. That's really weird since Magnus has indeed a ceiling control. I'm pretty much disappointed but I'm hoping it improves in the future.

This is a wonderful one stop mastering solution and my first results make me very happy. I have written a little article on my blog because I like it very much, there you can also hear the result of mastering with this plugin. I'm sure there are some updates coming but the start is fantastic! The article in my blog is at: https://alfreds-music.blogspot.com/2022/08/a-butterfly-that-brings-summer.html

I have to say for this price this plugin is a must buy! The combination of Total EQ and SyncPressor is absolutely awesome!
My negative point is the limiter which is basically unusable. My DAW shows clipping when I push it. A ceiling control would be really useful!
