In this video, we take a closer look at one of the most common — and most overlooked — problems in digital audio: aliasing distortion. Using a signal generator, an oscilloscope, and a spectrum analyzer, we clip a sine wave and watch aliasing appear in real time. Then we increase oversampling step by step — from 16× all the way to 256× — and see how the artifacts completely vanish.

Most clippers, saturators, and distortion plugins are algorithmic. They create harmonics mathematically, and the harder you push them, the more harmonics they generate. The moment those harmonics cross the Nyquist limit, they fold back into the spectrum and pollute your signal with frequencies that should not be there.
The result is the harsh, gritty, “digital” character that many producers blame on the plugin itself — when in reality, it is often just aliasing. A single switch to oversampling, or a session running at 96 kHz or higher, usually eliminates the problem entirely.
