Get the right dynamic range

HoRNet Plugins, in collaboration with The Buildzer, bring you “Track Coherence,” a dynamic range meter for your tracks.

Track Coherence is designed to help you achieve the right dynamic range for each track in your mix. This parameter is crucial in music, as getting it right for each track can lead to a more impactful mix.

Also known as the crest factor, dynamic range refers to the difference between the peak and RMS levels of a track. In Track Coherence, we call this “coherence.” The closer these two levels are, the more compressed the music becomes.

Recorded music often contains fast, short peaks (transients) that are nearly inaudible to the human ear. However, these transients can add up and create issues during mixing and mastering.

Track Coherence allows you to see if the peaks of a track are too far from its average level (RMS). If the distance is too great, you can correct it with a clipper, limiter, or fast compressor.

To start, select the “coherence level” you want to target from the range scale. For example, in dance, pop, or rock, you might choose 12 for drums and 8 or 6 for bass, synth, or guitars.

When you press play, the coherence indicator shows the dynamic range in real-time. If it reaches the 100% mark, your track has the dynamic range indicated by the scale control (12, 8, or 6 in our example).

You can aim for either the “max” or “avg” levels for your track. For instance, if you’re working with a drum loop and set the range to 12, you can target an “avg” of 12 for a more dynamic sound. If you want tighter control, tweak until the “max” reads 12.

Keep in mind, not every track can achieve every dynamic. So, use your ear in combination with our meter.
