EVERY MIX HITS THAT WALL.

Your vocal sits perfectly. Your kick hits hard. Your bass is weighty. Then you bring in the music bed — and everything disappears behind it. You reach for a traditional sidechain compressor, but it pulls down everything. The low end thins out. The energy drops. The mix loses its glue.

You spend 20 minutes dialing in crossover frequencies, attack times, and ratios — just to get the kick to poke through the bass. Or you give up and let the two fight for space in the low end.

The truth is: traditional duckers are blunt instruments. They see loudness, not frequency. They cut everything equally — even the parts of your signal that weren’t causing any problem.

IT SEES FREQUENCIES. IT CUTS ONLY WHERE IT MATTERS.

SpectraDuck is a sidechain ducker that looks at the spectrum — not just the loudness. When your kick hits at 60 Hz, SpectraDuck pulls down only around 60 Hz on the channel you’re ducking. The rest of the signal passes through untouched.

The result is ducking that follows the natural masking of your signal: where there’s conflict, it cuts. Where there isn’t, it leaves things alone. No crossovers. No fixed bands. No phase issues between bands.

And you don’t need to set any of that up. SpectraDuck detects the spectral profile of your sidechain and automatically figures out where the conflict lives.

THE MANUAL DUCKING TAX

HOW MUCH TIME ARE YOU WASTING?

  • Manual ducking setup per track (crossover, ratio, attack, release, threshold): ~15 min
  • Revisions when the ducker pulls down the wrong frequencies: ~10 min
  • Average tracks per month where you need ducking: 12-15
= 5-6 hours per month spent wrestling with blunt ducking tools

Even at a conservative €40/hour rate:

  • Monthly cost of manual ducking workflow: €200-240
  • Annual cost: €2,400-2,880
SpectraDuck: €29.99 one-time
Average payback period: less than 1 week

Year 1 ROI: 80x your investment — and that’s using only conservative time estimates, not the frustration, the second-guessing, or the sessions where the ducker ruins a take you loved.

The question isn’t “Can I afford this plugin?”
The question is: “Can I afford to keep doing this manually?”

THREE KNOBS COVER 90% OF USE CASES.

Amount

How hard the ducker pushes, as a percentage. 0% = inactive, 100% = full strength. Default: 100%.

Range

The maximum number of decibels it can cut at any moment. Think of it as the ducking ceiling. Default: 24 dB.

Sharpness

How surgical the cut is. High = follows the sidechain spectrum exactly. Low = spreads the cut over neighboring frequencies, more musical. Default: 30%.

With those three and a good starting preset, you cover most sessions in under two minutes.

BUILT FOR HOW MIXING ACTUALLY WORKS.

REAL-TIME SPECTRAL DISPLAY

Your signal’s spectrum drawn in cyan. The post-ducking spectrum in yellow. The gain-reduction curve in magenta — so you see exactly where the ducking is happening at every moment.

HP / LP DETECTOR FILTER

Tell SpectraDuck which frequencies to listen to in the sidechain. For a kick: 35 Hz to 220 Hz. For a voice: 180 Hz to 5.5 kHz. Tighter ranges mean more focused ducking, cleaner results.

AUTO TIME

Automatically estimates Attack and Release from the sidechain content. A dry kick gets short times. A sustained voice gets longer ones. On by default — leave it on for most sessions.

LOOKAHEAD

Adds a short buffer so the ducking anticipates transients — click-free operation on percussive sources. Off by default; switch it on when tracking live with the ducker in the chain.

MS MODE

Linked (both channels ducked equally), Mid Only (only the mono center is ducked), or Side Only (only the stereo sides — perfect for removing wide pads around a centered lead).

LISTEN MODE

Off (normal output), Sidechain (hear what the detector is listening to — verify your HP/LP settings), or Delta (hear only what is being cut — the teaching mode that shows exactly where the masking lives).

SURGICAL DUCKING VS. THE BLUNT ALTERNATIVE.

SpectraDuck Traditional Multi-band Compressor / Sidechain EQ
How it decides what to cut Auto-detects masking frequencies from sidechain spectrum You set bands, thresholds, and ratios manually
Crossover setup None needed You configure every band
Phase between bands No phase issues — no bands Inherent phase shift between crossovers
Time to useful result 2-5 minutes with a preset 15-30 minutes of setup
Learning curve 3 knobs + Auto Time Multiple crossover points, ratio, attack, release per band
Real-time visual feedback Spectral display + gain curve in real time Level meters only

Traditional multiband compressors are extraordinary tools. They’re designed for a different job — fixed-band compression with specific curve shapes. SpectraDuck does one thing: musical, spectral ducking. It does that one thing faster and more transparently than any multiband setup.

BUILT FOR MODERN MIXING SESSIONS.

KICK VS. BASS

Drop SpectraDuck on the bass bus, route the kick as the sidechain. Set HP/LP Detector to 35 Hz-220 Hz. In two minutes, the kick pokes through the bass without thinning the low end — because only the frequencies where the kick lives are being ducked.

VOCAL VS. MUSIC BED

Drop it on the music bus, route the vocal as the sidechain. Set the detector range to where the voice lives (180 Hz-5.5 kHz). The music ducks only in the frequencies that would mask the vocal — the rest of the arrangement stays full and present.

DRUM BUS GLUE

Place on the drum bus, route the kick. The snare and hi-hat stay untouched; only the low-mids that conflict with the kick get ducked. Drum bus feels tighter without losing its energy.

PODCAST / VOICEOVER

Background music that ducks only in the frequencies where the voice lives — not the entire spectrum. Your podcast music stays musical while the voice cuts through cleanly, every time.

WHAT SPECTRADUCK ISN'T.

Let’s be straight about the limits.

  • It won’t replace a full multiband compressor for surgical, fixed-band dynamic processing — if you need that, use TotalEQ MK2 or a dedicated multiband like HoRNet MBC.
  • It won’t work on a signal with no sidechain — without a trigger, SpectraDuck runs in passthrough. That’s by design, not a bug.
  • It won’t fix a badly recorded source — it ducks what you give it. If the masking is in the performance, nothing will.

What it will do — better than anything at this price:

  • Musical spectral ducking in under 5 minutes, every time
  • Real-time visual feedback on exactly where the ducking is happening
  • Auto Time that adapts to the sidechain material automatically
  • MS mode for surgical stereo bus work
  • No crossover phase issues — because there are no crossovers

We’re the best spectral ducker at this price point. We’re not trying to be everything to everyone — just exceptionally good at one thing.

TAKE 30 SECONDS. BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF.

You’re a great fit if:

  • You spend 10+ minutes per session setting up traditional sidechain ducking
  • You mix in genres where kick/bass, vocal/BGM, or drum bus ducking matters (EDM, pop, hip-hop, podcast, post-production)
  • You want to see — not guess — where the ducking is happening
  • You value a fast workflow over a complex one
  • “Low prices, great sound” sounds like your philosophy

Probably not for you if:

  • You already own FabFilter Pro-Q 3 and are happy with its multiband capabilities
  • You rarely or never need sidechain ducking in your work
  • You prefer vintage character and coloration over transparent processing
  • You need fixed-band dynamic EQ with specific curve shapes

Still unsure? Ask yourself this:
“Do I spend more than 5 minutes per session fighting with ducker setup?”

If yes, SpectraDuck will pay for itself before your next project is done.

FREQUENTLY ASKED.

CAN IT REPLACE A MULTIBAND COMPRESSOR?

In many cases, yes. SpectraDuck follows the natural masking of the signal — it cuts only where conflict exists. If you need surgical fixed-band control with specific attack and release curves for each band, a multiband compressor is still the right call. But for musical, adaptive ducking that works in under 5 minutes, SpectraDuck is faster and more transparent.

WHY DO I NEED A SIDECHAIN? WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE ONE SET UP?

SpectraDuck is a ducker — without a trigger signal telling it when to duck, it would not know when to act. If you connect the main channel with no sidechain: the signal passes through clean. The SC indicator in the top right of the interface lights up when the sidechain is active. If it’s off, the plugin runs in passthrough. That’s the design, not a bug.

WHAT DOES AUTO TIME DO? SHOULD I LEAVE IT ON?

Auto Time estimates Attack and Release from the sidechain content automatically. A dry kick gets short times; a sustained voice gets longer ones. With Lookahead on, the detector anticipates transients for click-free operation on percussive sources. We recommend leaving Auto Time on for most sessions.

HOW MUCH LATENCY DOES IT ADD?

Approximately 5 ms. Your DAW compensates automatically (plugin delay compensation — PDC). With Lookahead off, it’s suitable for live tracking and real-time monitoring contexts.

CAN I TRY IT BEFORE BUYING?

Yes. The demo version is fully functional — no time limit, no credit card required. Drop it on your bass bus, route a kick as the sidechain, and see if it solves your problem in a real session.

WHAT'S YOUR REFUND POLICY?

15 days to decide. If you’re not satisfied for any reason, email us at hello@hornetplugins.com with “Refund request” and we’ll process it within 24 hours. No questions asked. We’d rather you make the right choice than a rushed one.
