A free spring reverb with a lots of tones
The HoRNet Molla (/‘mɔlːa/, the Italian word for spring) is a free spring reverb plugin designed to offer a unique and vintage reverb character while maintaining simplicity and performance. Though small in footprint and price—it’s completely free—it inherits a powerful legacy. Molla uses the same advanced algorithm found in its larger counterpart, the HoRNet SpringVerb, to replicate the complex physical behavior of real spring reverbs. This means that even in a lightweight and minimal interface, you’re accessing the depth and nuance of a full spring reverb engine.
In a spring reverb, reverberation is produced by sending an audio signal through one or more physical springs under tension. The mechanical oscillations of the springs—triggered by the input sound—bounce back and forth, gradually decaying. These oscillations are then picked up by transducers and converted back into an electrical signal. The resulting sound has a distinct metallic, slightly gritty quality that became iconic in vintage guitar amps, organs, and later in psychedelic, dub, surf rock, and even modern indie music.
The origins of the spring reverb date back to the 1930s, emerging around the same time as plate reverbs, as part of the search for artificial reverberation in a pre-digital era. Spring reverbs gained popularity thanks to their compact size, which made them ideal for installation in musical instruments—most notably the Hammond organ. Their widespread adoption by guitar amplifier manufacturers further cemented the spring reverb’s place in audio history. Despite sounding markedly different from natural reverb spaces, its unmistakable character has led to its enduring appeal among artists and engineers alike.
With the development of Molla, the goal was to capture this unique sound and present it in a user-friendly, efficient format without losing the authenticity and musicality that define spring reverbs. The approach is inspired by SpringVerb, but adapted for users who need a streamlined, accessible tool for quick creative results. In Molla, you’ll find the attitude, color, and behavior of a real spring reverb packed into a compact plugin that’s ideal for both beginners and experienced producers.
Molla includes a carefully selected set of parameters that give you full control over the sound without overcomplicating your workflow. First, the intrinsic vibration time lets you shape the decay of the spring—going from short, snappy reverbs that add subtle body, to long, cavernous tails that can transform a sound into something otherworldly. This single parameter gives you access to a wide range of reverb behaviors suitable for anything from tight drums to washed-out vocals.
Next, we have the Density control, one of the plugin’s most expressive and creative features. When set to 100%, the reverb mimics a more natural, smooth decay—closer to what you’d expect from a traditional room or hall simulation. As you reduce the Density toward 0%, the sound takes on a more metallic, brittle, and lo-fi character, emphasizing the resonant artifacts of the springs. This makes Molla a great tool for experimental sound design as well as vintage-style mix effects.
A wet/dry blend control is also included, allowing you to precisely mix the original (dry) audio signal with the reverberated (wet) one. This is especially useful for parallel processing or for creating just a touch of ambiance without losing clarity in your original source. Whether you’re trying to subtly enrich a vocal or go full-on dub delay with a snare hit, this control gives you the flexibility to fit the reverb into your mix exactly how you want.
And of course, we couldn’t resist adding a touch of visual charm. When audio is sent into the plugin, a virtual spring lights up in response, giving you a visual cue of when and how the reverb is being triggered. It’s a small detail, but it reinforces the tactile, mechanical inspiration behind spring reverbs—and adds a fun, engaging element to the plugin’s interface.
From a technical perspective, Molla is light on CPU, easy to install, and compatible with all major DAWs in both Windows and macOS environments. It’s a great choice not only for producers and engineers looking for a quick vintage vibe, but also for musicians, beatmakers, or content creators who need reliable and musical reverb without overthinking settings.
Despite being completely free, Molla isn’t a “lite” plugin in the traditional sense. It offers access to rich, algorithmically modeled reverb built from deep research and audio engineering know-how. Whether you’re looking to recreate the feel of a classic Fender amp, give your lo-fi beat some dusty space, or just add some color and texture to your instruments, Molla will give you satisfying results with minimal effort.
In conclusion, HoRNet Molla is much more than just a freebie. It’s a smart, musical, and well-designed tool for adding characterful spring reverb to your productions. It captures the essence of vintage spring reverbs while offering a clean, modern interface that invites creativity. And because it’s free, there’s no reason not to try it—you might just find it becomes a go-to effect in your mix sessions.
love your plugins
