Control the dynamic range of your tracks with this broadcast compressor

Introducing HoRNet Dynamics Control, a broadcast compressor designed to give you complete control over the dynamic range of your sounds. Whether you’re working on a mix, a master, or a podcast, this powerful tool helps you manage both the loudest and softest parts of your audio with precision, ensuring a polished and professional sound every time.

Full Control Over Dynamic Range

Thanks to the three different compressors it provides, HoRNet Dynamics Control allows you to limit the difference between the loudest and the softest parts of your audio, effectively controlling the dynamic range. Whether you’re working on a dynamic track or need to ensure consistent loudness across a broadcast or podcast, this plugin offers everything you need to balance your sound. By combining these three compressors, the plugin provides a sophisticated approach to compression, giving you complete control over how your audio behaves.

Three Compressors, Three Unique Functions

The plugin consists of three compressors, each with distinct characteristics that contribute to a seamless compression process. The first compressor is a regular compressor that focuses on limiting the loudest parts of your signal. It features a soft knee and a smooth response, making it ideal for controlling peaks without introducing harshness or unwanted artifacts. This compressor works on the loudest transients, ensuring they don’t cause distortion or audio clipping.

The second compressor is based on the CompExp algorithm, designed to adjust the gain level in a way that “squeezes” the signal around a threshold level. This allows for more precise control over the mid-range dynamics, effectively compressing the signal around the threshold without over-compressing or losing the natural tone of your audio.

The third compressor is an “upward” compressor, which works differently from regular compressors. Instead of reducing the signal when it falls below the threshold, it amplifies the signal. This allows you to boost the softer parts of the audio without affecting the louder sections, providing more clarity and presence in the mix. This unique function is especially useful for vocal production and podcasting, where the dynamic range can vary greatly.

Combining the Three Compressors for Balanced Dynamics

The combined action of these three compressors helps you manage the dynamic range effectively. First, smooth out the peaks with the “top” compressor, which will limit the loudest transients. Then, use the “bottom” compressor to lift up the softer parts, ensuring every nuance of the audio is heard clearly. Finally, the “mid” compressor reduces the overall dynamic range, bringing everything into a balanced and cohesive sound.

This tri-phase approach to compression allows for much more flexibility than traditional compressors, giving you greater precision in shaping your sound. Whether you’re working on mastering, mixing, or podcasting, HoRNet Dynamics Control helps to ensure that your audio is clear, balanced, and consistent.

Global Controls and Saturation for Enhanced Performance

To make your workflow even easier, HoRNet Dynamics Control includes global attack and release times for the three compressors. These global controls allow you to set the attack and release times for all compressors simultaneously, making it easier to fine-tune the dynamics of your entire track without having to adjust each compressor individually. This feature saves you time and ensures a cohesive compression sound across all frequency bands.

We’ve also included our saturation algorithm, which acts like a soft clipper. This feature further enhances your sound by reducing peaks and adding a touch of analog warmth. The saturation algorithm ensures that your audio retains its natural tone while preventing distortion and preserving the integrity of the sound. It’s especially effective in broadcasting and mastering, where keeping the audio clear and punchy is critical.

Visual Feedback for Accurate Adjustments

Gain reduction (or increase) is displayed using both the classic meter and a graphical transfer function view. The meter gives you a clear indication of the amount of gain reduction applied, while the transfer function view provides a visual representation of how the compression is affecting your audio over time. This allows you to make precise adjustments and ensure that the compression is working as intended.

The graphical transfer function view is particularly helpful for visualizing the dynamic changes happening across different frequency bands. Whether you’re tweaking the attack and release times or adjusting the threshold, you can clearly see the effects of your changes in real-time, ensuring you’re always in control of your sound.

High-Quality Processing with Oversampling

Sound quality is guaranteed by the internal oversampling feature, which adapts to the sample rate of the host DAW to ensure the best possible quality at all times. The oversampling reduces the risk of aliasing and distortion, maintaining a clean and accurate representation of your audio. This is crucial when working with high-resolution audio or when processing complex, dynamic tracks where every detail matters.

Whether you’re working with high-resolution tracks or low-latency projects, HoRNet Dynamics Control adapts to your workflow and ensures optimal performance without compromising quality. The oversampling feature gives you peace of mind, knowing that your audio is always processed at the highest standard.

Designed for Broadcast, Perfect for Podcasting

While HoRNet Dynamics Control is designed as a broadcast compressor, its versatility makes it perfect for a wide range of applications. On the master buss, it shines by helping to achieve a consistent and polished sound. If you have very dynamic tracks, like a vocal performance or voiceover work, the plugin can help the audio stand out while maintaining a natural, balanced sound.

In the context of podcasting, this plugin is especially effective in managing the varying dynamic range often found in spoken word content. By smoothing out the louder moments and boosting the quieter parts, HoRNet Dynamics Control ensures that every word is clear, intelligible, and consistent. This makes it an invaluable tool for anyone working in voiceover production or podcasting.

Conclusion

HoRNet Dynamics Control is a powerful and flexible broadcast compressor that provides total control over your audio’s dynamic range. With three unique compressors, global controls, and advanced features like the saturation algorithm and oversampling, this plugin offers everything you need to achieve professional-quality sound with ease. Whether you’re working on mixing, mastering, or podcasting, HoRNet Dynamics Control ensures your audio is clear, balanced, and ready for any broadcast. Elevate your sound today with this innovative tool that redefines the art of dynamic control.

I would love to see a gate added to this. So, for instance, once the level is below a certain threshold, it will not be upward compressed. This is a problem with many upward compressors I have. There is no way to prevent the hiss from rising dramatically. If the upward compressor had a “cut off threshold” below which no upward compression would be applied, it would be very useful. You already implemented this idea in your Normalizer plugin. Perhaps add that function to this plugin as well.

I've just bought it, there's two things bothers me:
First : Bottom Compressor's Upward compression won't act below -48dB? It should apply from threshold down to the very bottom end volume. Now it make a huge volume change gap at the -48dB point, turn into unusable for me on mastering stage.
Second: Ratio too coarse, especially when Upward compression, hard to fine tune added gain. Two digit after the decimal point will have better control.
Can you fix it ASAP? Especially the first problem, Thanks.

Really a great plugin!!! I am only missing a few things like an auto gain for input and output and the auotogain at the output i would like to be able to set the number for example -23 that would be super great a dry/WET and knee would be very useful but otherwise totally recommended.

Awesome idea and execution! Having said that, I'd prefer to have an option to rotate the graph by 90 degrees to the left, so that the input is on vertical axis, like in almost every other compressor. I guess it's a matter of industry convention. I find myself tilting the head to the left constantly when using it, which can't be healthy in longer run 😉 😀

This is the best audio purchase I ever made. Im not going to say how Ive been using this unit for the past couple of months because I advise you to find your own creative ways of using it. All I can say is that this plugin has given me so many amazing sounds.

It took me a little while to get it going but by just making use of starboard dynamics technics with this unit , it's been rewarding me better than I could ever predict.

I wonder if they will ever come up with a MK2 version of this one, with operational and functionality short cuts. Anyway, I can still use it old style and it always brings a smile to my face.

Thank you so much Hornet! And it is almost free!

Michael Wirth says:

Sorry but I think it´s pretty much unusable because there´s no presets and it ALWAYS do to much!
