Real-Time key and chord detection

HoRNet SongKey MKII is a key detector, SongKey MKII works in real time analyzing a polyphonic audio stream (usually a song) and thanks to some advanced artificial intelligence algorithms identifies in which key the song is composed, SongKey MKII also tracks key changes during the song,

Since the brain inside SongKey MKII tries to “guess” the correct key, the three more probable keys are shown together with a confidence level for each key. SongKey MKII also displays a “note profile” for the song showing which notes are played the most.

SongKey MKII also analyzes the song as it progress and displays the current chord that is being played, a time window is used to identify chord changes and a different IA algorithm is applied to the note profile.

SongKey is very useful in those situation in which you don’t have an instrument at hand to find out the key of a song you are working on or if you are a DJ and want to make a mash up but you don’t know in which key a song is written. The chord detection feature gives you insights on the chord progression of the song so that you can better design your bass lines and pads.

(Nice GUI, good Price–performance ratio, easy to use)
I don't use this very often but whenever I do it puts a smile in my face. Very intuitive to use and with straight forward results. I use this in mostly two scenarios. I composed some nice melody or phrase with my midi keyboard and am looking for others elements to fit into. Since I never actually care about the key, I have no idea which key I am in. So I run SongKey to analyze my own composition and as soon as I know which key I am in it is very easy to browse for samples or retune samples or write a bass line or switch to another key that fits to this key etc. The other task I regularly use this for is to analyze samples I recorded, in order to sort them with BPM and song key.

This is a great plugin that gives you the overall key of a piece of audio as well as the chords that are being played… IN REAL TIME!
If you ever want to figure out a song without having an instrument.. This is what you need!

Sample based producers. gives you direct access to the key of your samples.
Super handy tool to figure out the key your samples are in. Making it easy and obvious to add basslines and additional melodies to your tracks using your VSTs.

I was recently introduced to HorNet by a friend as I was looking for a simple yet effective plugin to determine the dominant keys and chords of my music. I use a lot samples and I imrovise a lot in my song writing. In many cases that means spending a lot time sorting out the harmonic nature of my songs, so I decided to purhcase HorNet SongKey and I must say it has met all my requirements. Not only does it determine harmonies with great precision but it does using a very simple and use friendly interface. In addition, it can be used creatively in the sense that it suggests three possible tonalities in rank order. So let’s say the first suggestion is A minor and the second E minor; you now have a suggestion for how you might modulate the songs harmony by moving from A minor into E minor in order to create some harmonic interest. I can highly recommed this plugin to anyone who needs a tool that can determine the tonality or chordal structures within audio, samples or midi files.

I love working with plugins from HoRNet. Every plugin is very stable, user friendly and most of the time excactly what I need. I've been using HoRNet Songkey for quite some time now and it's one of my favorite plugins. I do a lot of short projects (with heavy deadlines) and it makes my life much easier. When I have to make pitch corrections or replace a bass sound, it works perfect every time. My ears don't have perfect pitch and it normally takes a lot of time to figure out the songs key. And when I ask the artist, it turns out he doesn't have a clue. So a really time saver which I use almost every day. And with this price tag, you can't go wrong.

Songkey Mk2 is insanely useful. When you're under time constraints and need to find the key or particular chord notes within a song quickly, this is the shiz. I also see sampled based producers becoming very familar with this, especially hip-hop heads, when layering instrumentation over samples. Accurate and reliable. Key Estimation gives you a second and third alternative estimation of the song's key, learning and updating as the song plays, and gives you a % rating of how 'sure' of each guess the plugin is. This is a great feature, and can be especially useful for remix producers looking for alternative progressions of say, an acapella vocal. To top, visual feedback of the intensity of each note is amazing. If music theory isn't your strong point, this is vital for finding that one note in a chord that's maybe 15% the velocity of it's siblings, but completely alters the tone of said chord.
And of course, price wise, it's crazy cheap. Like silly cheap.
My only drawbacks are CPU usage (but not really a problem as never needs to be in use constantly), and that sometimes the GUI update for Current Chord can be quite jumpy, even with relatively simple material. But this is why I praise the note intensity scale so much, as this can sure things up fine when in doubt.

Brian Lawler says:

Works as advertised, displaying the most likely key of the audio input that it is assigned to, and the current detected chord. I particularly like the "note profile", that presents a spectrum analyzer like display but using musical notes rather than frequency bands.

Ricky Scott says:

Love this!! Total time saver when remixing, DJing or re-tuning samples. This is a must have plugin!

Peter says:

something every producer should have in his or her arsenal its a big time saver and a steel at this price just buy you wont regret it

Alberto De La Cruz says:

Like many others have said, I don't use this often but it sure comes in clutch when you do need it! Great price and great UI I love this plugin. Although I don't use it often I probably use it more than others here when I am sampling chords from another song for my hip hop beats.
