Why four compressors and not one

A compressor is not a generic tool. The circuit decides what it does to the sound, and no single circuit does every job well. That is why studios have always kept several units in the rack, and why the four in this bundle are the four that get patched the most.

The HA2A is our recreation of a legendary opto leveling amplifier — tubes, transformers, and a photoresistor paired with an electroluminescent panel. It is the slow, forgiving one: put it on a vocal and it holds the level without ever announcing that it is working. We built it from measurements taken on a real unit in the studio of our friend Flavio, also known as TheBuildzer.

The H76 is our emulation of the classic FET compressor limiter. It is fast, it colours, and it is the one you reach for when a vocal, a snare, or a bass DI needs to sit forward and stay there. We modelled the full analog path, input and output transformers and Class A amplifiers included, so the saturation and the harmonic character come along with the gain reduction.

The H160 is built around the sound of a legendary hard-knee VCA compressor. Threshold, compression, output gain, and that is the whole front panel. It tightens drums and bass without smoothing the life out of them, which is why that kind of unit has stayed in racks for decades.

The H4K is the VCA bus compressor: the “big console” glue that pulls a mix together on the stereo bus. Switched ratio, attack, and release, continuous threshold and make-up, and the cohesion that turns a set of tracks into a record.

The same modern toolkit on all four

These are vintage circuits with the workflow of a modern plugin. Every unit in the bundle gives you:

• Proper gain staging — input and output trim with auto trim on the H series, automatic make-up gain on the HA2A, so you drive the emulation right without hunting for the level by ear.
• Target gain reduction — tell the plugin how much compression you want and let it set threshold or peak reduction for you.
• Dry / Wet — parallel compression without a second bus.
• Analog and Hiss modelling — switchable, because sometimes you want the noise floor and sometimes you do not.
• Mid / side and stereo modes on the HA2A, oversampling on the H series.

Where each one goes

HA2A — lead and backing vocals, bass, acoustic guitar. Anything that needs to sit still without sounding squeezed.

H76 — lead vocals, snare, bass DI, room mics you want to hear breathe. Fast attack, obvious character.

H160 — kick, snare, bass, anything percussive that needs to hit harder without losing its transient.

H4K — stereo bus, drum bus, any submix that sounds like separate tracks instead of one performance.
