Your peak meter cannot tell you how loud your track is.

A peak meter shows how close each sample gets to 0 dBFS. It says nothing about how loud the music sounds. Two masters can peak at exactly the same level and still be miles apart in perceived loudness — and that is the difference listeners hear first.

Broadcasters, streaming services and podcast platforms work with loudness, measured in LUFS, and most of them adjust what they play to their own target level. If you only watch peaks, you find out where your track lands after it is published.

LUFS is close to a decibel, with one important difference: the measurement includes a pre-emphasis filter that compensates for the way the human ear hears different frequencies. That is why a LUFS reading tracks perceived volume far better than dB.

ELM128 MK2 measures loudness the way the EBU R128 standard defines it, in real time, on mono, stereo and 5.1 tracks. It will not tell you what your mix should sound like. It tells you exactly where it stands.

HoRNet ELM128 MK2 meters and Short-Term, Integrated and Range readouts

Five measurements, one window

  • Momentary — the last 400 milliseconds. Catches quick jumps in dialogue and effects.
  • Short-Term — the last 3 seconds. Shows whether a section of music or speech sits where it should.
  • Integrated — the whole programme since the last reset, leaving out long silences. The number you deliver against.
  • Loudness Range — the spread between the soft and the loud parts, in LU. Too high means too dynamic, too low means squashed.
  • True Peak — 4x oversampling below 192 kHz, so it sees the inter-sample peaks that clip after export.

Perfect for: mastering, podcasts, video, broadcast delivery

It can ride the gain for you

Turn on realtime normalization and ELM128 MK2 adjusts the gain of the incoming signal so that it does not exceed your reference level. You choose which measurement drives it: Momentary, Short-Term or Integrated.

  • History graph with up to 12 hours of loudness, with selectable time and dB range
  • Mono, stereo and 5.1 metering
  • Resizable interface
  • Load and save your own presets

Perfect for: voice-over, long sessions, live streams
