Introduction

What is ZeroWidth and why does it exist

Stereo widening is hard to get right. Crank the side gain and your mix falls apart in mono; play it safe and the track sounds narrow and flat. HoRNet ZeroWidth takes a different approach: it listens to your audio, learns the correlation minima of seven frequency bands, and automatically shapes the stereo image band by band.

ZeroWidth is an intelligent stereo widener that combines three coordinated processes running on the M/S (Mid/Side) representation of your signal:

  • Multi-Band Correlation Analysis - continuously measures L/R correlation on 7 frequency bands (10 kHz, 5 kHz, 2.5 kHz, 1.25 kHz, 625 Hz, 312 Hz, 156 Hz)
  • Auto Side EQ - learns the correlation profile and applies per-band gain on the Side channel to balance the stereo image
  • Auto Width - computes a global Side gain from the post-EQ wideband correlation, widening the mix as far as it can safely go

Who is it for

ZeroWidth is for anyone who wants a wider, more stable stereo image without breaking mono compatibility:

  • Mix engineers looking for a fast, automatic way to add width to a submix or full mix
  • Producers who want their synths, guitars and ambience to fill the stereo field
  • Mastering engineers who need controlled, correlation-aware widening
  • Anyone tired of using a static M/S tool and clipping in mono by accident

The HoRNet philosophy: tools should solve real problems. ZeroWidth doesn't try to be a do-it-all imaging processor: it focuses on a single job — making your stereo image as wide as your material allows — and does it transparently, preserving mono compatibility.

Main Features

Multi-Band Correlation Meter

A 7-band correlation meter shows the L/R correlation of the input, the output, and the applied Side gain for every band. Each row lights up as the algorithm learns the correlation minimum of that band.

In practice: you see exactly which frequencies are mono-incompatible and how ZeroWidth is treating them in real time.

Auto Side EQ

After the correlation profile is learned, the Auto Side EQ engine applies a per-band gain on the Side channel. The target correlation is band-dependent, so the plugin widens the frequencies that can take it and leaves the problematic ones alone.

In practice: highs and ambience get opened up, while the low-mid and bass region stays rock-solid in mono.

Auto Width

The Auto Width knob (0–200%) controls a global Side gain. The actual gain is derived from the post-EQ wideband correlation, so the amount of widening adapts to whatever the Auto EQ is doing.

In practice: turn it up, the mix gets wider; turn it down, the mix gets narrower. The plugin handles the safety math for you.

Manual Side EQ

Each of the 7 bands exposes a manual gain control (−6 dB…+6 dB). As soon as you move a band away from its learned value, it switches to manual mode and the plugin follows your setting.

In practice: the algorithm proposes, you dispose.

Two-Phase Learning

ZeroWidth learns in two distinct phases, both fully automatic:

  1. Phase 1 — Correlation analysis. The plugin reads the L/R correlation of each band and stores the lowest value it sees. A progress bar counts bands until every band — plus a post-EQ wideband reading — is considered learned.
  2. Phase 2 — Side EQ + Width. Once the profile is stable, the Auto Side EQ computes a base gain for every band from the learned minima, and the Auto Width derives a safe global Side gain from the post-EQ wideband correlation.

The result: a set of band gains, an overall width amount, and a continuously updated correlation meter that tells you how each band is behaving. Press RESET at any time to start over.

Important: ZeroWidth works on the stereo signal. On a mono source it will simply pass the audio through (after M/S conversion there is no Side content to manipulate).

Interface

Main Controls

  • Learning Overlay — progress bar that fills as the 7 correlation bands (plus the post-EQ wideband) are learned
  • Multi-Band Correlation Meter — 7 rows (10 kHz → 156 Hz) with input correlation, output correlation, and the applied Side gain for each band
  • AUTO WIDTH knob — 0–200%, controls the global Side gain computed from post-EQ wideband correlation
  • AUTO EQ knob — 0–200%, scales the amount of the Auto Side EQ
  • 7 Side-EQ band gains — −6 dB…+6 dB per band, become manual as soon as you move them
  • RESET — clears the learned profile and restarts analysis
  • BYPASS — hard bypass, plugin passes audio unchanged

Correlation scale

The horizontal bar in each row is the correlation axis, ranging from −1 on the left, through 0 in the middle, to +1 on the right.

  • +1 — perfect mono-compatible content (L and R are identical)
  • 0 — fully decorrelated (very wide)
  • −1 — out of phase (would cancel in mono — red warning)

The two bars per band are the input correlation (top) and the output correlation (bottom). The number on the right of the row is the current Side gain in dB.

Quick Start Guide

4-Step Workflow

1
Insert ZeroWidth on a stereo track or stereo bus. Make sure audio is playing.
2
Let the plugin learn. Play 10–15 seconds of representative material. The Learning overlay fills up band by band; once a band is learned its row stops flashing.
3
Check the result. The Auto Width and Auto EQ amounts are already applied. A/B with BYPASS to confirm the image actually got wider and cleaner.
4
Fine-tune if you want. Use the 7 per-band gains to nudge any band manually, or change the AUTO WIDTH / AUTO EQ knobs. RESET restarts learning at any time.

Practical tip: during learning, play the most representative section of the track — the chorus for a vocal, a full mixdown for a bus. The plugin stores the lowest correlation it sees, so short, dense passages lock in the relevant minima.

Detailed Operation

Signal flow

Every processing block runs in the M/S domain:

L/R M/S Auto Side EQ Auto Width M/S L/R Correlation Analysis (input) Correlation Analysis (output) AUDIO PATH ANALYSIS TAP
  1. Stereo L/R is converted to Mid and Side.
  2. The Correlation Meter analyses both the input L/R (per band) and the output L/R (per band and wideband).
  3. The Auto Side EQ applies per-band gains to the Side signal, derived from the learned correlation minima.
  4. The Auto Width scales the whole Side signal by a global gain computed from the post-EQ wideband correlation.
  5. M/S is converted back to L/R and a final peak-safe stage limits the output to ±1.0.

Correlation bands

Approx. center 10 kHz5 kHz2.5 kHz1.25 kHz 625 Hz312 Hz156 Hz
Typical role Air / sparklePresenceUpper midsMidrange Low midsUpper bassBass

The plugin analyses correlation on these 7 fixed bands. Auto Side EQ uses a per-band correlation target (lower for the high bands, stricter for the low bands) so widening is concentrated where the material can take it.

When Auto Width helps

  • The mix sounds narrow and lacks space
  • You have a strong Mid-panned source (kick, bass, lead vocal) that anchors the center
  • You want ambience and reverbs to bloom

When to use the manual bands

  • You want a specific band to stay narrower than the algorithm suggests
  • You want to push a single band (e.g. the air band) harder than Auto EQ does
  • You want a fixed “sculpt” of the stereo image that doesn't change when you re-trigger learning

Manual override behaviour

As soon as you change one of the 7 band gains away from its auto value, that band is flagged as manual and the plugin follows your setting. The Auto EQ keeps running on the other bands. Press RESET to clear the manual flags and re-run learning.

Auto vs Manual bands

When the plugin finishes Phase 1, every band gets an auto base gain computed from the learned correlation minima. The 7 band controls on the interface start at that value and switch to manual as soon as you move them. Press RESET to discard all manual values and re-run learning.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Tips

  • Learn on a dense section — the plugin stores the lowest correlation it sees, so play the chorus or a full mixdown, not the intro.
  • Watch the post-EQ wideband reading — it is what drives the Auto Width amount. If it is close to 0 the mix is wide; if it is close to 1 it is still mostly mono-compatible.
  • Stack with another imager — use ZeroWidth first to set a safe baseline, then a static M/S tool for additional creative moves.
  • Use it on a bus — it works best on stereo submixes (drum bus, vocal bus, FX bus) where the algorithm has a stable correlation profile to learn from.
  • Lock the algorithm — once the bands are learned, set them manually if you want a static “frozen” image that doesn't drift when the input changes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Learning on silence — if no audio plays during the learning phase, the correlation minima are not meaningful and the Auto Side EQ starts from garbage.
  • Learning on a solo'd track — a single mono-panned instrument is fully correlated; the algorithm will not learn anything useful. Use ZeroWidth on a stereo bus or stereo track.
  • Trusting the output bar blindly — if the output correlation goes negative, you have out-of-phase content; back off Auto Width.
  • Re-resetting constantly — the plugin needs a few seconds of stable audio to lock the minima. Don't mash RESET.

FAQ — Frequently Asked Questions

Can ZeroWidth replace a traditional stereo imager?

No, and that is not the goal. ZeroWidth is an automatic correlation-aware widener. It sets a safe, baseline-correct stereo image; you can use a static M/S tool (Haas, band-specific stereo widener, etc.) for additional creative moves.

How long should I let audio play during learning?

10–15 seconds of representative material is a good rule of thumb. The Learning overlay shows progress: once it disappears, every band has been considered and Phase 2 is active.

Why does my mix get narrower when I enable the plugin?

When some bands of your source go out of phase (correlation < 0), the Auto Side EQ reduces those bands to prevent them from cancelling when summed to mono. The narrower image is the price of staying mono-compatible. If you want to push those bands back, you can override the offending band manually, or lower the Auto EQ amount. A correlation of +1 simply means the band is mono — in that case the plugin actually has plenty of headroom to widen it.

What does RESET do?

It clears the learned correlation profile, clears the manual overrides, and restarts learning from scratch. The plugin will not produce meaningful output until it has had time to learn a new profile.

Can I automate the parameters?

Yes — every parameter exposed by the plugin is automatable. Be careful when automating the AUTO WIDTH and AUTO EQ knobs during playback: large jumps can produce audible artifacts.

Does ZeroWidth introduce latency?

No — the processing is zero-latency (it operates on per-sample M/S conversion and side-channel scaling, with no FFT-based processing in the audio path).

Is the plugin state saved with the project?

Yes — the plugin serialises the full state including the learned correlation profile, the Auto Width configuration and the Auto Side EQ configuration, so reopening a project restores the same image.

Why is one of the bars red?

The bar turns red on bands whose output correlation is below −0.05: the audio would cancel partially in mono. Back off the Auto Width or override that band manually.

Introduzione

A chi è rivolto

In pratica: l'algoritmo propone, tu disponi.

Apprendimento in due fasi

ZeroWidth impara in due fasi distinte, entrambe completamente automatiche:

Interfaccia

L'interfaccia in modalità chiara

L'interfaccia in modalità scura

Controlli principali

  • Manopola AUTO EQ — 0–200 %, scala l'intensità dell'Auto Side EQ

  • +1 — contenuto perfettamente mono-compatibile (L e R identici)
  • 0 — completamente decorrelato (molto ampio)
  • −1 — fuori fase (verrebbe cancellato in mono — avviso rosso)

Avvio rapido

Workflow in 4 passi

1
RESET riavvia l'apprendimento in qualsiasi momento.

  5. L'M/S viene riconvertito in L/R e uno stadio finale di peak-safety limita l'uscita a ±1.0.

Comportamento dell'override manuale

FAQ — Domande frequenti

Posso automatizzare i parametri?
